Youth Educational Success (YES)

The YES program includes several complementary components, all of which are intended to help youth in subsidized housing programs be healthy, stay in school, increase academic success and attend institutions of higher education. Activities include:

  • In-school case-management. In-school support helps ensure youth are supported and learn skills critical to being personally and academically successful; activities include counseling, tutoring, intensive academic remediation services and mentoring;
  • After school and summer enrichment programs. Quality out-of-school time is essential to helping youth be successful during the school hours; activities include tutoring, sports/fitness, recreation and theater camps.
  • Wellness and physical education. One-time and ongoing wellness and physical education activities are periodically held on-site at public housing communities to support physical and mental health; activities have included karate and other fitness and nutrition classes.
  • Academic performance awards. Students who make the A/B honor roll and/or have perfect attendance during a reporting period are eligible to attend special events and/or receive gift cards.
  • School supplies. Youth cannot perform well in school if they do not have the necessary supplies, such as paper, pencils, notebooks, and backpacks, among other items. At the start of each school year, packets with grade-level basic supplies are distributed.
