Scholarship Spotlight: Layla Mohsin

Haca MisEducation

As told by Layla Mohsin, HCV Participant

Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to do something important.

I wanted to be the childhood figures I’d seen in cartoons – like Pocahantas.

I wanted to be as caring and understanding as Snow White.

I wanted to change lives like Mulan.

When you’re a kid, everything seems easy, the world is at your feet, and you have this mindset that when you get older, you can do anything.

Now that I’m older, I know life has many limits. But the Austin Pathways HACA Scholarship has shown me that through hard work and determination, the possibilities are boundless.

Because I had to live in a difficult situation as a child, I had to move a lot and had to be in too many schools with so many different friends. Graduation from school was not easy, but with my parents’ support, I had the chance to graduate from my high school. After that, I was able to attend college for three years at home in Iraq.

When I got to the United States, I was so happy that would I have the chance to study whatever I like. I chose to study in the challenging field of medical office administration at Austin Community College. I am excited that I will soon be able to use what I’ve learned to start my career.

Life has its ups and downs. Through it all, I managed to make friends who I know will always be there, and I am closer than ever with my family.

All my life I have wanted that Cinderella happy ending – I have wanted to try on that glass slipper and have it fit perfectly.

That’s what I am hoping for after I graduate from college.

I want the privilege of having more than a high school diploma, the opportunity to make a difference, and the chance to help make the world a better place.
